Argentinian Enrique Pieretto is the Waratahs’ newest starting prop after season-ending injuries to everyone else.
It probably sums up the Waratahs’ season that new Argentinian prop Enrique Pieretto, having been recruited as a loan player last week from Glasgow, left a warm and sunny Scotland and flew into cold and wet Sydney on Saturday.that by the end of the night, days before he’d even attended a training session, Pieretto became the No.1 prop at the club.
The tighthead prop, who played for the Jaguares in their outstanding 2019 Super Rugby season, has been playing in the UK for the last three seasons, but was given the green light to go on loan by Glasgow after struggling to crack into the top team this year. It’s a big ask with after only three training sessions but coach Darren Coleman has no other options. The Tahs lost their last two fit contracted props last week, in Hayden Thompson-Stringer and Harry Johnson-Holmes, and Wallabies loan prop Pone Fa’amausili was recalled by the Rebels.
Former Brumbies prop Harry Lloyd has been drafted from Brisbane club rugby this week as more depth, but there is no more front-row calvary over the horizon.Appreciative of Pieretto’s effort to fly around the world, Coleman and his family took the prop for a fish-and-chips lunch at rainy Coogee on Saturday, and he was in the rooms later as the Tahs lost another heartbreaker on lake Allianz. The defeat left NSW at the foot of the ladder, with three games left.
