The appointment of our next international manager is important but the League of Ireland needs better support from our government and governing body.
When you consider his inexperience at appointing managers, we need to give this fella a break. If you are Irish then of course you are likely to believe we are the most important country on the planet. And amongst the madness there is no doubt that the biggest sport in our country is the beautiful game of football.
It is amazing that recently the FAI director of football was proudly announcing his Football Pathways Plan.Across the water they love that kind of phrase, don’t they? You can keep throwing out the word vision but it is shortsightedness if you are trying to keep everyone happy rather than understanding where you have to go to, and who you have you talk to, to get results. And what was clearly a bizarre issue of pride was Marc telling us how extensive the consultation was in the preparation of the document.Roddy Collins, another League title winning manager, also wasn’t consulted.
I am not sure that the FAI understands the damage that such uncertainty is doing to Irish professional football. Yes, our next international manager is important but not half as important as rebuilding trust with the Irish politicians who discriminate against our biggest sport and get let off the hook because the GAA and IRFU are run by people who appear to be more polished than those who lead the FAI.It is truly embarrassing in 2024 when Irish politicians talk about sport, they always feel obliged to talk about the GAA first, an amateur sport with little international dimension.
