Veteran broadcaster Pat Kenny, who recently celebrated his 77th birthday, says he has no plans to retire from his daily radio show on Newstalk. Kenny, who moved to the station eleven years ago after leaving RTÉ, enjoys the fast-paced nature of his job and the constant learning opportunities it presents. He cites major global events like the Trump elections, Brexit, and Covid-19 as examples of the ever-changing landscape of current affairs.
Pat Kenny says every day is a school day on his radio show and he has no plans to retire any time soon. The former Late Late Show host left RTÉ and moved to Newstalk eleven years ago and says he is still learning about current affairs and politics after all of his years in broadcasting.
The daily news cycle means no two days are the same in his line of work and he enjoys that spontaneity. There is always something going on. Over the years we have had the first Trump election, Brexit, Covid, our own election, the second Trump election, we’ll have our own Presidential election this year too. “It is non-stop, but I thrive on that – it keeps me going. Every day is a school day and there is always something new to learn.”“I have no plans to hang up the boots at the moment. I’ll keep going as long as they want me,” he explained. When quizzed on any future projects, he replied: “I always have my eyes open, but there is nothing bubbling on TV at the moment.” Pat was speaking at the Dublin premiere of Sky’s new documentary series, Boyzone: No Matter What, this week. The much loved boyband debuted on The Late Late Show under Gay Byrne’s leadership, but Pat got to know them very well during his time as host of the chat show. He said: “I know them so well from over the years. They are more like pals than a band to me, because they were on so many times. I interviewed Ronan Keating as a solo singer as well, and had Keith Duffy on a lot when he was acting, and so on and so forth.The radio presenter added that Boyzone members Ronan, Keith, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and the late Stephen Gately were “the right combination at the right time” and that was their secret to success. He told us: “I think Louis probably seized the day. There was a gap in the market because Take That were temporarily gone. "Against all odds, he created an Irish boyband – who would’ve thought five Irish lads could be so cool? And they really were.”
