Former Kerry star Pat Spillane expressed his disappointment with the current state of Gaelic football on Friday's Late Late Show, sparking debate on social media.
Friday night's Late Late Show took on a distinctly Gaelic flavour with a special dedicated to the legends of Gaelic football and hurling. Joining Patrick Kielty in the studio was Pat Spillane , the legendary Kerry footballer, who shared his concerns about the state of the game he loves. Spillane expressed his hope that the new rules introduced to Gaelic football will help revitalize the sport.
He drew particular attention to the stark contrast in passing styles during last year's All-Ireland final between Armagh and Galway. Spillane highlighted the overwhelming number of hand passes compared to kick passes, stating that there were 592 hand passes against only 97 kick passes. He argued that this statistic was a testament to the dominance of handball over the traditional Gaelic football style, likening it to a 'handball match' rather than a true display of Gaelic football. Spillane, who attended the final as a spectator, revealed that his attention was more captivated by a seagull on the pitch than the game itself. He recounted his fascination with the bird, even going so far as to Google its intelligence, which led him to believe the seagull was deliberately exhibiting its presence on the field. His comments sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some agreeing with his assessment while others defended the current state of the game
