Ronan Lawlor sadly lost his life in a freak riding accident in 2010 before he could fulfil his potential as a jockey

We're sitting in the foyer of the Lord Bagenal Hotel in Carlow. Deep in the heart of Mullins country.

It was a devastating loss for Mullins and all who knew Lawlor, who had celebrated his 21st birthday a few weeks before and was due to sit his driving test later that morning. They’re young boys, still of primary school age, impishly posing with the Irish Gold Cup.Florida Pearl is his stable star and this was his first of four Irish Gold Cup wins and easily the biggest success of Mullins’ blossoming training career.

Some 25 years on Patrick has been crowned champion amateur jockey a record 15 times, with over 800 career wins, eight coming at the Cheltenham Festival. It was the second time tragedy had arrived at the door of the Lawlor family. His older sister Deirdre died at a young age over 30 years ago in a car accident.

Lawlor had played minor football with Carlow and was also on the Under-21 panel but his ambition was to become a jockey and he had been working hard to achieve those dreams.
