Paul McCartney said that it was John Lennon's idea to split up the Beatles, also calling it 'the most difficult period of my life.'
his former bandmates to dissolve their contractual relationship, which likely only led to more speculation that he was the one who wanted out.
In his new interview with the BBC, McCartney explains why the Beatles didn’t announce the breakup for months after the decision was made in the fall of 1969. “For a few months we had to pretend,” he said. “It was weird because we all knew it was the end of the Beatles but we couldn’t just walk away.”
He added that his former bandmates eventually thanked him for the lawsuit. “I had to fight and the only way I could fight was in suing the other Beatles, because they were going with Klein,” McCartney said. “And they thanked me for it years later. But I didn’t instigate the split.” He hasthat he believed anthologies, archival projects, and documentaries would have been impossible if not for his legal action.
If you are a die-hard Beatles fan, you might be a little confused that McCartney still feels the need to defend his honor. It’s not the first time he has recounted this exchange, and Lennon’s “divorce” comment specifically is a staple of many biographies. Still, there’s something exhilarating about the fact that all these years later, despite the deaths of many who were involved, Sir Paul still cares.
