A new song using John Lennon’s voice from a 1978 demo will be released later this year – but the beauty of music is that it’s fleeting 🖋️ _emilybootle for ipaperviews
Of course, that’s not to say we can’t appreciate music that was written years ago – the time and place that something was written doesn’t have to match the time and place that it’s heard in order to be meaningful. Take Joni Mitchell’s recent concert, for example. Mitchell suffered an aneurysm in 2015 and lost the ability to walk and talk – it was thought she would never perform again.
The same goes for ABBA and the Beatles, of course, two of the greatest bands ever. One only needs to scroll through TikTok to note that music from the past – Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush – has a way of sticking around and reattaching itself to new lives, new experiences. But I’m not sure McCartney’s new song can have the same effect. It’s not quite “now” and not quite “then”.
It’s not properly nostalgic, because it didn’t have resonance at the time, but it’s not properly new either – pushing forward its use of technology, but not musically. And music is also powerful because of something that feels a bit magic: the chemistry of the band in the recording studio together. It’s something that’s difficult to define, but the greatest records are infused with the very specific conditions of the recording.
The Beatles songs are the product of a specific time, a subtle, inimitable alchemy – a thrilling moment in the history of the universe that happened when Paul, John, Ringo and George collided sixty years ago. That period was special, like all things in life, because it was fleeting – extending it indefinitely with AI just dilutes its meaning. So as much as new John Lennon will thrill and move many people, I doubt the new track will quite match the real thing.
