Paul Mescal has said that his time playing gaelic football in his youth helped him land the coveted lead role in the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning epic Gladiator.

His performances caught the eye of the underage intercounty management team and the Normal People star began playing for the Lilywhites and even won a Leinster minor football championship in his county colours in 2013. Mescal had to bulk up for his role in Gladiator, with the Irishman explaining that his primary goal when training for the action movie was to be strong, not necessarily to grow into a muscular sex symbol.
His impressive physique didn't go unnoticed by his co-stars, with Pedro Pascal explaining the the Irishman's bulked-up frame proved challenging when the pair faced off in the arena
