Woman arrested after fatal hit-and-run of pedestrian in northwest Houston
A man who had been pushing a grocery cart across FM 529 in northwest Houston late Saturday was fatally struck by two vehicles, one of which fled the scene in a hit-and-run, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The man, who had not been identified as of Sunday, had been crossing FM 529 near the 16500 block around 10:45 p.m. Saturday, officials said. He"failed to yield right of way," the sheriff's office said, and a car struck the grocery cart, and its side mirror hit the man. The force of that collision pushed the man into another lane of traffic, where he then was struck by a second vehicle, which authorities said was driven by Heilen Marquez.
The pedestrian was found dead by authorities who responded to the scene. The driver of the first vehicle stopped but Marquez, who was reportedly driving the second vehicle, allegedly left the scene without stopping, authorities said. A family member drove Marquez back to the scene, according to investigators. She then was arrested for failing to stop and render aid, sheriff's office officials said Sunday.
