Nearly twice as many pedestrians were killed at night than during daylight hours and 58 per cent of fatalities occurred on urban roads with speed limits under 60kph
The number of pedestrians killed on Irish roads is on course to hit a 15-year high this year, according to the Road Safety Authority .
“This year to date, there has been an alarming increase in fatalities on the roads,” said Mr Chambers. “Almost half of the fatalities this year have taken place between Friday and Sunday, with the highest numbers occurring on Saturday.” “The increase in fatalities makes for stark reading; road deaths have a devastating impact on families and communities,” said Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman of An Garda Síochána’s Roads Policing Unit.
