Despite causing debilitating pain, PID sufferers say they have been shamed because of its association with sexually transmitted diseases. Sarah Graham meets them
Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the female reproductive system which includes the womb, fallopian tubes and ovaries Emma Wright, 27 describes herself as being “quite a ‘stiff upper lip’ sort of person” when it comes to pain. Living withJust a month before the UK’s first lockdown, Emma had travelled from London to Hampshire to celebrate her mum’s birthday. “We’d gone out for the afternoon, and I started to feel really fluey, it came on quite suddenly,” she recalls.
According to the NHS, PID is a common condition, although it’s unclear exactly how many people in the UK are affected each year. For many though, its association withIn Emma’s case, an STI wasn’t the cause of her infection – but she says she still felt shamed by the gynaecologists who examined her in hospital. “I was on a ward with five other women and, at 24, I was quite young compared to everyone else there.
Helen*, 25, was diagnosed with PID last spring. Although she didn’t experience the same agonising pain as Emma, she was alarmed by bleeding during and after sex – which can, in rare cases, be a red flag for cervical or vaginal cancer. “It was bright red, so I was very panicked, and called my GP straight away, who told me to go to a sexual health clinic,” Helen says.
