at The Civic Club of Harrisburg will be such a special community event.
This year’s theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” And while Friday’s event at The Civic Club of Harrisburg is striking a similar note of unity, it has a slightly different twist. This celebration is an opportunity for those who aren’t Latino to acknowledge the community’s significant contributions to history and heritage all Pennsylvanians share.
To pay tribute to the many ways Latinos have enriched life in Central Pennsylvania, The Civic Club of Harrisburg is honoring several of its leaders. Maria Alejandra Hernandez, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, will offer the keynote address in a nod to the importance of the agency as an advocate for Latino interests.
Harrisburg City Councilman Ralph Rodriguez is among those being honored for his personal story of overcoming significant obstacles in childhood and into adulthood. Rodriguez talks of being in “survival mode” as a child after losing his father to a drug overdose. But instead of being defeated by the hardships that struck him early in life, Rodriguez overcame them. And he’s dedicated his life to help youth of all colors and cultures do the same.
