A 70-year-old Irish pensioner is facing jail time rather than demolish a granny flat she built in her back garden for her granddaughter. Mary Newman spent her life savings on the structure, which provides a home for her granddaughter Jade and her baby daughter Kenza.

We decided to knock the shed and have a granny flat built. Mary applied for retention permission for the granny flat but it was refused. She was told the structure needed to be attached to the main dwelling.
A fresh application proposes to link the flat to the patio door which Mary said is “not ideal and will add extra expense to me to build the connection”. In July he appealed a decision by Tipperary County Council refusing retention permission for his “log cabin” to An Bord Pleanala.
