A Fine Gael source said; 'The state pension is currently €265 a week and we want to move it to €300 before the next election'
The final figure has yet to be agreed but Government TDs have been informed it is definitely going ahead and will be the same or more than the €12 euros people received this year.
"It looks like we'll be spending 1.4 billion on pensions which is €500 million more than the €880 million we spend to fund the €12 increase for this current fiscal year." Alone says that one in five elderly people are now living in poverty and that has doubled in the past 12 months. It also says that old folks living alone are more likely to live below the breadline.
There will be a one off energy payment in the Budget and this will be paid to everyone before Christmas. There are currently one million people aged over 60 years of age living in Ireland.But apart from the state pension, Government insiders say there will be tax changes especially in relation to changing bands, and help will be given to renters, homeowners and small landlords.
