The Pentagon, which is tracking the craft, decided not to shoot it down due to the risk of injuring people on the ground, officials told Associated Press. Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement the balloon is “currently travelling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.”
He added that the US took steps to ensure it did not collect sensitive information. The balloon was spotted in Montana, which is home to one of the nation’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base.
