People breathing contributes to mould problems in flats, Dublin City Council claims

People breathing can contribute to damp and mouldy conditions in flat complexes, according to a report by Dublin City Council.These day-to-day tasks were included among the reasons for the dropping quality of the houses.

The new report outlined a number of reasons flats were accumulating mould and dampness as they looked at addressing a 2017 ruling saying they were in breach of tenants' human rights, DublinLive reports. In 2017, The European Committee of Social Rights said there was persistent damp and mould in many flats around Dublin with DCC swiftly establishing a work group to examine the problem.A section giving reasons for high humidity mentions people breathing as one of the factors."In a property of four people, each will contribute approximately four pints of moisture per day through, breathing, showers, baths, boiling kettles, cooking etc.

It said: "Household activities such as cooking, washing and using unflued gas heaters, as well as peoples’ breathing, provide the primary sources of moisture that cause humidity indoors. ."
