Pep Guardiola has issued a message to the organisers of the Ballon d’Or as the likes of Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Lionel Messi and Vinicius Jr all face off for the prestigious award
The Spanish midfielder played a key role for City as they secured their fourth consecutive Premier League crown. He then carried his form onto the international stage by helping Spain win Euro 2024 .
And now Guardiola has backed compatriot Rodri to be among the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or this year. Speaking in a press conference in North Carolina, he said:“When I saw Spain I saw him and he was the level he has been playing for many years. His consistency was good. Rodri, Aymeric Laporte, Ferran ... they were together and I am happy for them.
Guardiola is not the only one to have backed Rodri to challenge for the award. The Spaniard’s Man City teammate Rico Lewis has also shared his opinion and believes Rodri should become the first Premier League star since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 to claim the Ballon d'Or. Rodri made 50 appearances for Man City last season on route to his fourth personal Premier League title. He scored nine goals and provided a further 14 assists in all competitions.
