Heimir Hallgrimson just needs time, says the five-time capped forward.
Ireland’s performance against Greece showed glimpses of how the Boys in Green can progress under new boss Heimir Hallgrímsson.O’Brien, a summer signing for Shelbourne, was at the Aviva Stadium to watch his old pals fall to a 2-0 defeat to Greece.

It’s not going to happen overnight. “Even the glimpses the other day, we had good spells passing the ball out from the back, we had good patterns of play, they maybe just need a little more time. “Hopefully in that little extra time that he gets on the training pitch with the boys, we start getting the results and we start moving in a positive way. “I have belief, I do have belief from what I saw yesterday. Although the result was 2-0, I did see some glimpses of some things that maybe Ireland wasn’t doing back in the day. “They were really, really good with the ball at times. Maybe that might be the way he wants to play. Who knows? Hopefully he is successful in his reign.” O’Brien’s last appearance for Ireland was in the 1-0 win over Georgia under Mick McCarthy - and two players that also featured that day were in action on Tuesday night; Robbie Brady and Matt Doherty. A former Millwall striker, he made more than 200 appearances for the Lions before moving to Sunderland, where he played 53 times. After spells at Portsmouth and Shrewsbury, he found himself at Damien Duff’s Shelbourne this summer to help them in their league and FAI Cup quests. Next up for the Reds is Saturday's FAI Cup quarter-final against Derry City, their closest rivals in the Premier Division title race. O’Brien, who scored for Ireland in a 1-1 draw with Poland in September 2018, under Martin O’Neill, likened international football to a game of chess.“I don’t know what it is about international football, but it’s slower in the build-up, but when you get to the final third it’s very intense. “So it’s a very different kind of approach and it’s hard to judge the two and put them together, because they are very different games. International football is a whole different ball game. “I actually went to the game against Greece with one of the boys, and I was just sitting there thinking there was a lot of slow build-up, a lot of what I was involved in as well when I was there. “It’s very, eh, I just want to use the word ‘chess’; who is going to make the first mess-up. There’s a lot of that in terms of international football. “Listen, there is a lot of explosive stuff as well when you get to the final-third, don’t get me wrong, but the build-up is very much, who is going to slip up first?”
