AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan says the biggest day on the footy calendar will be hosted in Perth should the MCG be unavailable, but a final decision will be made early next week.
After weeks of speculation the AFL boss fronted the media and confirmed Optus Stadium beat out Adelaide Oval for the honours of hosting this year’s Grand Final as a backup to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
But as Victoria continues to grapple with a COVID-19 outbreak, the AFL opted for a contingency plan on the eve of the series final. The AFL has just confirmed that Perth will host the 2021 AFL Grand Final if Melbourne is unable to due to its COVID situation.
