The January accident near Danville that involved a trailer transporting 100 lab monkeys was the impetus for PETA seeking documentation into primate inspections by veterinarians.

Crates holding live monkeys are scattered across the westbound lanes of state Route 54 at the junction with Interstate 80 near Danville, Pa., Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, after a pickup pulling a trailer carrying the monkeys was hit by a dump truck. They were transporting 100 monkeys and several were on the loose at the time of the photo. An animal rights organization says it has identified 56 apparent violations of federal animal welfare regulations involving more than 1,880 primates.

The 100 long-tailed cynomolgus macaques represent only a tiny fraction of the total number of primates transported across the U.S. annually, she said. The primates were shipped to nine research facilities or intermediate handlers in Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin, PETA says.Facilities it alleged failed to examine the monkeys within the required time included Charles River Laboratories, Labcorp Drug Development, the National Institutes of Health, Orient BioResource Center, PreLabs and Primera Science Center.

Michele Fallon, the Montour County woman who required medical treatment after coming in contact with the monkeys, says she has fully recovered.
