After watching this year's All-Ireland quarter-finals and semi-finals, the Tyrone legend believes the GAA have a big call to make.

Peter Canavan says the GAA have a major call to make with venues for the knockout stages of next year’s All-Ireland football Championship.

Both attendances were disappointing given that a sell out 82,300 turned up for last year’s Dublin/Mayo and Derry/Cork Sunday quarter-final double date. That’s a staggering drop of 40,000 fans, and a revenue hit in the region of €1 million, something the GAA are likely to look closely at. Mayo appear to be a bigger draw for Dublin fans, given their rivalry over the past decade and that they sold out Croke Park for a quarter-final last year.

In general, attendances at Dublin games - one of the biggest cash cows in the GAA - have dropped significantly this year, something which will hit Leinster GAA coffers particularly hard. On top of this, just 21,445 showed up for the Dublin/Meath quarter-final tie. The lack of competitiveness of the Leinster Championship is clearly a factor here with Dublin fans and opposition supporters voting with their feet and staying at home.

Going away from Croke Park would also necessitate one off quarter-final fixtures being played at provincial venues, rather than double headers at GAA HQ.
