Irish comedian Peter Flanagan is touring the UK, Ireland and Europe with his debut show 'Fresh Prince of Kildare', a comedic exploration of his move to London and experiences with a Buddhist cult. He gained recognition through stand-up, writing, and social media, attracting attention from comedy stars and building a large online following.
Peter Flanagan is a whip-smart and uncompromising comedian from County Kildare . He started doing stand-up while still a student at Trinity where he studied philosophy and political science.
Since then his razor-sharp joke writing and storytelling have taken him to the best comedy venues in the world, from the Perth International Comedy Festival to the world famous Comedy Store in London. Peter first came to attention for his searing opinion pieces in the Irish Times, the Journal and the Irish Independent, covering topics like politics and mental health. A late adopter to social media, Peter’s Instagram starting exploding last year thanks to his outrageously funny comedy reels.
Now with over 250k followers across all platforms, his material has come to the attention of American comedy superstars like Alec Baldwin and Rosie O’Donnell. Now he’s touring the UK, Ireland and Europe with his debut show ‘Fresh Prince of Kildare’. The show is about him moving to London and joining a Buddhist Cult. There’s jokes about politics, some religion, and then he tells a sex story at the end.
The tour comes to the Moat Theatre in Naas on Thursday May 7th and The Ambassador Theatre in Dublin on Saturday May 9th. Best Memory : Probably doing a student comedy night at Captain America’s on Grafton Street when I was 22. A bunch of my friends showed up to support me and I remember it going really well. The high last for a couple of days afterwards and I think I’m still chasing that now, 15 years later.
Best Comedian : The comedian who has had the biggest influence on me is English comic Stewart Lee. My pals and I came across his stuff on YouTube when we were students and his dry, intellectual dry seemed so different to everyone else back then. My girlfriend got me a ticket to see him last year for my birthday and he was as good as ever! As far as Irish comedians go, I’ve been blown away recently by Grace Mulvey.
She opened for me in Brighton and she was class. Best Gig: Queens of the Stone Age in the Ambassador way back in 2008. I was 19 and they were touring their Era Vulgaris album. The energy from the crowd was something else.
It blows my mind that I’ll be doing stand up there in a few weeks! Best Song : Depends when you ask me but right now I’m going to say ‘Favourite’ by Fontaines DC. Best Book : ‘Ablutions’ by Patrick deWitt is the funniest book I’ve ever read. It’s about an alcoholic barman in a divebar in LA and all the awful characters he meets there.
Best Movie : Inglorious Basterds. Tarantino’s best movie, for me. Best Holiday: I went inter-railing from Amsterdam to Paris via Berlin, Prague, Krakow, Lake Bled and Budapest when I was 20. The world felt full of possibility!
Best Restaurant : There’s a lot on the street outside my house in Leyton, from a Jamaican-Irish bar serving spice bags and Scottish café that does an amazing Haggis sandwich. But I’m going to give the nod to family-run Panda in Leytonstone for its world-class dim sums. Bring cash. Best Beauty Product : Cantu hair spray.
It makes my curls really pop! Best Friend : ‘Horse’ Connolly. My family moved to Kildare when I was three and he was my neighbour. We’ve always shared the same interest and he’s the funniest person I know.
Best Joke: My girlfriend loves chocolate. She’s always eating chocolate. And she likes to joke that she’s got a chocolate addiction.
‘Keep me away from those chocolates, I’m addicted to them! ’ So I put her in the car and I drove her downtown. And I pointed out a crack addict. And I said ‘You see that, honey?
Why can’t you be that skinny? ’. Antony Jeselnik. Best Advice: My Dad sent me to do work experience with his pal, a barrister, hoping that he’d convince me to become a lawyer.
