Dessie Hutchinson will succeed this year's joint captains Stephen Bennett and Jamie Barron

Peter Queally has made his first big call as Waterford manager by handing the captaincy to Dessie Hutchinson.

The ace Ballygunner forward will lead the team in 2025, with Lismore’s Iarlaith Daly acting as vice-captain. Hutchinson succeeds Jamie Barron and Stephen Bennett, who were joint captains for the 2024 campaign, as Waterford narrowly failed to emerge from the Munster round robin. The 27-year-old’s focus is currently very much on his club’s Munster final against Sarsfields of Cork at FBD Semple Stadium on Sunday as Ballygunner bid for a record fourth Munster title on the spin and a record seventh in all.READ MORE: Padraig O'Hora steps away from Mayo camp ahead of 2025 campaign

The 11-in-a-row Waterford champions are also odds-on favourites to win the All-Ireland having last claimed that title in 2022. Hutchinson has completed five seasons with Waterford having made his debut in the Covid-interupted 2020 campaign after parking his soccer career. He had been on the books of Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion and then played in the League of Ireland with Waterford United before concentrating on hurling only.
