The PGA Tour has announced it will replace the current stroke play format of the Tour Championship with a match play knockout tournament starting in 2028. The top 32 players from a season-long points competition will compete in this event after an initial stroke play qualifier.
The PGA Tour has announced a significant overhaul of its season-ending format, introducing match play for the Tour Championship starting in 2028. Currently, the FedEx Cup playoffs and the Tour Championship conclude with stroke play events.
The new structure will begin with a 72-hole strokeplay event for the top 90 players from the season-long points list. The top 32 finishers from this event will then qualify for a two-week, 32-player match play tournament, where they will compete in groups of eight before progressing to head-to-head knockout rounds to determine the champion.
This move aligns with recent changes to the tour, including the introduction of promotion and relegation between the Championship and Challenger Series, which is set to take effect in the same year
