The Eris variant of Covid-19 is driving a rise in cases
With cases of the new Covid Eris variant rising in Northern Ireland, health officials say they are monitoring the situation.
Despite the surge in cases across the UK, overall levels of hospital admission remain at relatively low levels when compared with the last two years, although the says this may rise further. "The number of people who were admitted to hospital with COVID-19 has risen again in recent weeks, but still remains at relatively low levels compared with the last two years, although it may rise further. In the last year, there has been a wave of COVID-19 infection every three to four months.
"EG.5.1 was noted to be growing at a faster rate than most other circulating lineages in the UK, though it was less common and growing more slowly than XBB.1.16, which has been present in Northern Ireland since February 2023." And they have issued this advice to the public ahead of the roll-out of this year's autumn Covid-19 booster jab which will be offered to those at high risk of serious disease and who are therefore most likely to benefit from vaccination.

Quantitative biological strategy helps upgrade vaccines against COVID-19Researchers from the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the University of Hong Kong, along with their collaborators, have proposed a promising quantitative biological strategy for dynamic updates of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 virus. They demonstrated that a vaccine based on the ancestral SARS-CoV-1 strain could offer more extended and broader protection than other options.
