Herman Whitfield III, the man who died after being tased by Indianapolis police during a mental health crisis, was a 'genius' pianist.
in the Indianapolis community for a different approach to how the city handles calls for help involving mental health situations.
Whitfield was a big man, his former professor explained, and had big, thick fingers."But he was able to elicit from the piano the most beautiful, soft sounds," Pompa-Baldi said."The most delicate, well-crafted sounds that you can ever imagine.""He had a gentle soul. He was soft spoken," added Pompa-Baldi."When you looked at him, he was very big. But you could immediately get the sense he would never hurt a fly.
The pair lost touch for some years before reconnecting in May 2020. Whitfield reached out to his former professor to let him know he was in Miami, Florida, and teaching. He was just coming out of a creative block and beginning to compose again — this time specifically for piano. Since 2017, for example, IMPD has used specialized Mobile Crisis Assistant Teams, or MCATs, consisting of an officer trained on crisis intervention and a clinician, to respond to certain situations.
