A Vancouver-based developer successfully appealed a Saskatoon city council decision stopping construction of an affordable housing project. yxe skpoli
The dispute focuses on the building of sewer infrastructure that Arbutus agreed to undertake in order for the project to proceed to meet deadlines to attain affordable housing funding from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.Article content
The board found the appeal met three key requirements: specifically, that it did not represent “special privilege” for the company, that it did not critically contravene the zoning bylaw and that it would not harm neighbouring properties. The city’s objections to requests by Arbutus to bend the usual rules seemed based on an alleged purity in the interpretation of zoning and development rules. Anyone who’s watched city hall for even a little bit of time knows that’s not reality.
Saskatoon’s longest-serving mayor, who lost the 2016 and 2020 elections to Mayor Charlie Clark, also stressed the need for affordable housing in Saskatoon.
