October's poll will be the first in Scotland where voters have to show identification at polling stations

South Lanarkshire Council has outlined the documents which can be used by voters in the Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election – which will be Scotland’s first to require photo ID.

Electors can also apply for a free voter authority certificate at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate – but must do so by 5pm on Wednesday, September 27, to be able to vote in the Rutherglen & Hamilton West poll. “If your ID document has expired it will still be accepted so long as the photograph is still a good likeness of you, unless it is a temporary VAC which is not valid for use on the date of poll.
