The once enviable sculpted gardens in Piccadilly were a public space that Manchester could be proud of. However, a combination of questionable aesthetic development, neglect and rising crime has reduced the one popularFollowing the demolition of the hospital in 1910, the site remained unused for decades until the decision was made to create the public gardens in the 1930s.

This £100m revamp proved hugely unpopular with Manchester residents and tourists alike, particularly the"hated" free standing wall - dubbed the Berlin Wall - which was only demolished a few years ago. But there is more hopeful news for the future. The city council has recently announced plans to create"a world class" space" in the area around Piccadilly Gardens.Before any plans are submitted, the designs will be made public and Manchester people consulted on their views about them.
