When the Flying Scotsman was built in 1923, the idea of it being driven by an all female crew would have been impossible.

But today, in the iconic train's centenery year, that's exactly what happened as it returned from its home in York to grace the East Lancashire Railway once more. In honour of International Women's Day, an all-female crew made up of ELR volunteers and a Network Rail driver took control of the famous train, driving passengers on three round trips from Bury Bolton Road to Rawtenstall.before we set off, volunteer Linda Henderson who was the ELR's first ever female driver, called the trip a 'massive achievement'.

"It's an absolute dream to actually be able to have an all female footplate crew," she said."This will be the first time I ever actually run a train with no men on board. "There are people in the industry - I call them dinosaurs - who aren't too keen on having women around, and it just proves what we can do by sticking with it."The Flying Scotsman at Bury Bolton Road station
