Personal Independence Payments can be worth up to £184 a week for the disabled and MPs told the House of Commons about some heartbreaking cases caused by delays to payments being approved

Serious concerns have been raised at the level of a backlog in dealing with the Personal Independence Payment which MPs have said have left some constituents in terrible conditions. Department for Work and Pensions questions in the House of Commons this week heard from MPs who said that there are currently a ‘staggering’ almost 300,000 PIP claims still to be sorted out.

“What is the Minister doing to improve clearance times, so that people are not left in limbo, worrying about whether they can afford the extra costs associated with their disability or long-term health condition? The Government urgently need to get a grip.” MP Alistair Strathern said one of his constituents had a humiliating experience after being on phone for three hours trying to get an assessment finished. He said: “I was heartbroken to hear the experience of a constituent who had to go through an enhanced medical assessment for PIP. A bowel cancer survivor with severe arthritis, she was made to stay on a phone call for over three hours to be assessed.

In another case highlighted by Labour’s Kate Hollern a constituent had their payments stopped even though they tried to renew their claim on time: “In early December, my constituent was informed by the DWP that they must renew their personal independence payment entitlement. They were told that if the necessary forms were not returned by 13 January, their PIP could be stopped.

Cancer patient kicked off GP list after moving 300 yards down the roadCancer patient kicked off GP list after moving 300 yards down the roadA cancer patient was shocked to discover his GP had ditched him after 38 years – because he moved 300 yards down the road. Dan Lane, 38, says he was ‘kicked into the gutter’ when he was taken off his GP’s list of patients without warning. The technical advisor, who suffers from a rare genetic condition, was told by his practice that his new address was no longer within their boundaries. He moved from his old home to a new one just 300 yards in Lower Wick, Worcester, four months ago. Both addresses are less than two miles from Spring Gardens Group Medical Practice where Dan has been a patient his whole life. Dan says being kicked off the GP list has caused him ‘anxiety and stress’ and he feels especially vulnerable due to his condition.
