Avanti West Coast reduces number of trains running between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly on Saturdays, sparking passenger criticism. Despite this, the government awards Avanti a new nine-year contract.
Avanti West Coast has reduced the number of trains running between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly on a Saturday by almost half The reduced Saturday timetable will start immediately and sees the number of services run on a Saturday being reduced from around 50 to just 30 trains until 1 January.
Customers wait on the main concourse at Euston station on 15 October, 2023 after train delays with four children – I have to get back in time for certain events, to pick them up – there’s no safety net – so for me to travel back and forth from London is almost impossible now,” she told“From a personal point of view, I never travel with my children because it’s too stressful.
“It’s having such a big impact on our lives. When Virgin operated the route, it just wasn’t like this. The service has become dramatically worse under Avanti. It makes me so angry.”He said: “I had planned to travel to London from Manchester on a Saturday with my mother to give her a break. We now have to reconsider those plans. Trains are often used by the elderly and vulnerable, and it is stressful for those people when they can’t rely on them as they should be able to do.
In response to the cuts to services, an Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “We have been seeing some short-notice cancellations on our network and would like to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused. “What is the Government’s response to this announcement? Where’s Wally – Transport Secretary Mark Harper – when passengers need him?’”: “After previous poor performance, leading to missed meetings, appointments and leisure events, passengers will be dismayed that Avanti have once again chosen to make timetable changes and reduce the number of services during one of the busiest months of the year. This indicates that the rail industry still cannot provide a full, robust timetable.
