A plan to introduce legislation to increase the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21 has been approved by the Cabinet .

A plan to introduce legislation to increase the legal age for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21 has been approved by the Cabinet.

The legislation would not apply to those who are between the ages of 18 and 21 and who are currently legally entitled to be sold tobacco products.Since December, the sale of vapes to under 18s has been banned. There is currently no proposal to extend this ban to the age of 21. Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said he was"confident this measure will help young people avoid a lifetime of addiction and illness from tobacco smoking".

"Analysis from the US Institute of Medicine shows that increasing the age of sale to 21 will act to limit the social sources of cigarettes for our children and young people under 18 as they will be less likely to be in social groups with persons who can legally purchase cigarettes," he added. In a statement, the Department of Health said the proposal is to speed up the goal of reducing Ireland's adult smoking rate to less than 5% of the population.
