Plano ISD announced that the district has 105 National Merit Program semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Students entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test , which served as an initial screen of program entrants, according toThe nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state, the announcement said..
Semifinalists are required to have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, Plano ISD said. Additionally, they must be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test. To become a finalist, a semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, the announcement said.
The applications include information such as the semifinalist’s academic record, school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. There are more than 16,000 semifinalists; more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level, according to the announcement.All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the finalists.
