Unveiled: Transformative plans to turn area of Greater Manchester into 'Atom Valley' with 20,000 new jobs and 7,000 homes
Plans to make north east Greater Manchester the ‘engine room’ of the region’s ‘next industrial revolution’ are set to be signed off by local leaders. Proposals for a new Mayoral Development Zone across Rochdale, Bury and Oldham - dubbed ‘Atom Valley’ - will go before a meeting of the combined authority on Friday.
READ MORE : Rochdale council bids for £40m Levelling Up funds - and it could mean big things for Heywood and Middleton “Atom Valley will be right at the heart of this vision, delivering the world-class infrastructure, the high-quality jobs, and the investment opportunities needed to make this the engine room of Greater Manchester’s next industrial revolution.” The proposals have already been backed by Oldham council, whose leader Amanda Chadderton said the MDZ would increase ‘exciting opportunities’ for residents and support wider regeneration.
Meanwhile, Coun John Blundell - portfolio holder for economy and regeneration - stressed the Northern Gateway site was of ‘national significance’. “When the government has been looking to try to get investment from America for large car plants or investment from Germany in hi-tech jobs this site has been shortlisted multiple times by the government," he told the meeting.
