Sunflower blooms in San Antonio provide nectar for butterflies, native and European bees, and birds love the seeds

Sunflower blooms serve as nectar sources for butterflies as well as native and European bees, and many species of birds love the seeds. If you are looking to grow a flower that is an all-star when it comes to attracting birds and pollinators, consider sunflowers.

Another option is to get seeds from a fellow gardener’s sunflower patch. They may have some seed collected now from last year, or you can make a plan to collect some of this year’s seed to use next year. If you have sufficient seed, you can just distribute it over the surface of the soil like you would any wildflower. Like with all wildflowers, the key to successful plant production is the sunflower seed making contact with the soil and having access to the sun. I have never watered my patches, but an initial watering would help.

It does not occur every year, but the first creatures to make use of the patch often will be egg-laying painted lady butterflies and their caterpillars. The caterpillars can strip the foliage as they mature, but sunflowers seem to be able to tolerate the feeding and still releaf to produce blooms, which serve as nectar sources for butterflies, as well as native and European bees.
