Playwright calls on Abbey Theatre to address 'difficult conditions'
A playwright has called on the board of the Abbey Theatre to address what he described as "difficult working conditions" at the national theatre.
Jimmy Murphy was one of more than 300 theatre professionals who signed an open letter in January criticising the direction the theatre had taken, including the use of too many "bought in" productions. Following on from that a series of meetings between representatives of the signatories and the theatre were arranged. One of those meetings, involving a group of writers, took place today.
However, speaking afterwards, in what he said was a personal capacity, Jimmy Murphy said there was another problem at the theatre, that of difficult working conditions and the use of "inappropriate language". He called on the Minister for Culture and the Arts Council to intervene and insist the Abbey appoint an independent investigator to investigate the allegations.
