Poilievre has ‘captured the attention of Canadians,’ but unclear if this will translate into a win, say politicos via thehilltimes

Let's kiss: Conservative MP and leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre, pictured kissing his wife, Anaida, on March 31, 2022, at an Ottawa rally. From:Political observers say it’s still unclear whether the large crowds Pierre Poilievre is drawing to his rallies and his traction on social media will translate into votes for the Ottawa-area MP considered to be the front-runner in the federal Conservative leadership race.

Politicos interviewed for this story said that there’s a strong possibility that in an 11-candidate race, no one wins on the first ballot. In that case, a lot will depend on the alliances built by different candidates for the second, third, or any subsequent ballot votes. “[With] a rock band, they say they become an overnight success, but they’ve actually been playing as a band for 10 years in small clubs across the country,” said Armour. He said that at least since Jason Kenney’s return to Alberta after the 2006 election, Poilievre has been the MP of choice to speak at Conservative riding associations across the country.

“He’s tapping into the cultural zeitgeist of the right wing right now. There was an interesting meme I saw today that talked about Alberta; how our personal insurance rates have gone up, our corporate insurance rates have gone up, our price for schools have gone up, our price for basically just living in this province since the Conservatives took over has all gone up. But no one cares about anything except the carbon tax. The only tax that matters is the carbon tax.
