Police increase powers in Blackpool after fight involving men with balaclavas and weapons
Police were forced to increase their powers in a section of Blackpool after a fighting involving men 'wearing balaclavas and carrying weapons'.
Lancashire Constabulary were called to reports of an affray in Caunce Street at around 1.45pm on Saturday . The force subsequently imposed both Section 60 and Section 60AA orders across a large section of the town, including Blackpool Council, KFC, Farmfoods and Sainsbury's. It meant police could stop and search anyone in the area in the designated area, highlighted in the map below, and have the authority to remove any face coverings. The order remained in force until 3.15am today and police patrols have been increased in the area.Police said they are taking the affray reports "very seriously" and the extra powers were needed "in order to investigate this incident effectively and keep you safe".
In a statement issued last night , a force spokesperson said: "At 1.45pm today we received reports of an affray involving men wearing balaclavas and carrying weapons in Caunce Street, Blackpool. We take these reports very seriously and in order to investigate this incident effectively and keep you safe, a search authority under Section 60 and Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, has been put in place.
"It will remain in place until 3.15am tomorrow. These powers allow our officers to stop and search any person inside the designated area shown on the map and the authority to remove any face coverings."They are there for reassurance and to ensure reports are investigated thoroughly. Anyone with information about the incident on Caunce Street is asked to call 101, quoting log 792 of June 3, 2023.
