A whistleblower alerted authorities after two titanium hip replacements were reported stolen from the site.

Police are probing claims that metal hip replacements have been stolen from a crematorium. Local council chiefs have dismissed an employee in connection to the missing implants.

Commenting on the grim tale at Thornhill Crematorium, in Cardiff, South Wales Police spokesman said: "We can confirm a South Wales Police investigation into the alleged theft of orthopaedic implants at Thornhill Crematorium is currently ongoing." The force is yet to make any arrests in the case. "During this unauthorised visit two titanium orthopaedic joints were taken from a recycling container. These joints are kept aside for recycling purposes and are sold by the council every year raising money for various charities. Once they are set aside for recycling, they are not traceable to any person."

The council spokesman said the value of the implants taken was unknown. A BBC report from 2012 quotes the metal recycling expert Ruud Verberne as saying: "The operation to provide a new hip may cost you around £5,000. But the return value as scrap is maybe, per kilo, around £10. And there are five hips per kilo."
