At least nine people were shot on West Garvey Avenue on Saturday night, near a street where Lunar New Year celebrations had taken place, a sheriff's deputy said.
The shooting broke out on the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue around 10:20 p.m., and no deaths had been confirmed, Sheriff’s Deputy Miesha McClendon said.
Homicide investigators are at the scene, Sergeant Gabriel Akchyan of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said, without giving more details. The Monterey Park Police Department confirmed that there was a shooting but declined to give specifics. Video footage circulating on social media showed a person being loaded into an emergency services vehicle on a stretcher, as well as police vehicles parked around a stage adorned in red lanterns and a banner that read, “Happy Year of the Rabbit!”
