West Mercia Police has urged people to 'stay on the line and let us know you're okay' if they accidentally call 999 amid an increase in emergency calls.

The force's operations and communications centre received almost 20,000 999 calls last month. Of these, 4,791 were abandoned, which is around 155 999 calls every day.

Now, West Mercia Police has urged people to stay on the line and let police know they're okay, which will allow handlers to establish real emergencies quickly. Improvements to phone and smart watch software, which make it easier for people to let police know if they do need assistance, also increase the possibility of a pocket-dial.
