Police in Northern Ireland are appealing for information following two separate incidents where police vehicles were deliberately rammed, resulting in injuries to officers. In the first incident, which occurred in the Belfast Road area of Newry on Friday night, two police units responded to a report of a suspected stolen vehicle parked at a garage forecourt.
When officers attempted to engage with the occupants, the driver allegedly accelerated and crashed into one of the police vehicles, causing significant damage and injuries to the two officers inside. The suspected stolen car, a blue Mazda Demio, was later located in the Bessbrook area. Inspector Alastair MacDonald, speaking on behalf of the police, condemned the attack, stating that the vehicle was used as a weapon against the officers and that those responsible should face the full consequences of their actions in court. He expressed gratitude that the officers' injuries did not appear to be life-threatening but emphasized that the outcome could have been much worse. The damaged police vehicle had to be towed from the scene and will require repairs, impacting the local community's access to police services. In a second incident, which happened shortly after 2.30 am on Saturday morning in the Dobson's Way area of Bessbrook, a silver van rammed into another police car. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and the damage to the police vehicle was not considered serious. Police are continuing their investigations into both incidents and are urging anyone with information, including dashcam or other footage, to contact them. Inspector MacDonald emphasized the importance of public cooperation in helping to identify those responsible for these attacks and bring them to justice. He reminded the public that officers are dedicated to serving and protecting their communities and that such acts of violence are unacceptable
