The fate of 39 pools, sports centres, libraries and community venues will be decided at a committee meeting this afternoon

Opposition politicians have criticised proposals to close 39 North Lanarkshire swimming pools, libraries, sports facilities and community centres – calling the plans “shocking and [an] unforgivable sell-out of communities”.

Clare Adamson, whose Motherwell & Wishaw constituency could lose the Aquatec, Cleland library and three Wishaw community centres, says she fears the closure of facilities could “lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour when communities are deprived of other outlets”. Steven Bonnar MP says the 11 closures in his Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill constituency are “completely unjustified” and has written to council chief executive Des Murray and to all committee members asking that the closures be reconsidered.

Constituency colleague Fulton MacGregor MSP urged residents to make their views known ahead of today’s crunch meeting, and said: “If these proposals go ahead they will not only impact on health and wellbeing opportunities but ultimately also on many people’s jobs and income during already difficult times.”
