and the nation is again awash in mourning, this time for children, who were loved and cared for and had favorite colors and foods they disliked and siblings they tussled with and specific pajamas they insisted on wearing to bed. Now they’re gone.which has more guns than people
, and where students, grocery shoppers, moviegoers, worshippers, and people enjoying concerts are killed in mass shootings, are offering us platitudes. They’re sorry, they’re praying, and they’re heartbroken, but not heartbroken enough to do anything. Take Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who is ostensibly a Democrat, though he’s often the lone vote that keeps Democratic policies from advancing through the Senate. Pressed by reporters last night, Manchin said he would do “anything I can” to pass “common sense” legislation to address gun violence in the wake of the Texas shooting. Yet the senator insists that hewhich is pretty much the only way that Democrats could actually do something with their majority in the Senate.
