'I paid the fine immediately and offered the British people a full apology.' Boris Johnson addresses the Commons 'in all humility' for the first time since he was fined for breaking coronavirus lockdown rules. Latest: 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602 and YouTube
Sir Keir Starmer is responding to Boris Johnson's statement to MPs following his fixed penalty notice for breaking lockdown rules in 2020.The Labour leader says:"Even now, as the latest... apology stumbles out of one side of his mouth a new set of deflections and distortions pour from the other.
He starts by saying he has just left a virtual meeting with world leaders on the situation in Ukraine. A debate and vote are likely to be held on Thursday, despite Boris Johnson due to be on an official visit to India at that time. But Labour clearly believes there is sufficient political capital to be gained for them to push ahead with it anyway.
"The policies that she has announced today are unworkable, unethical and extortionate in the cost for the British taxpayer," she said."Will she admit the £120m she's announced doesn't pay for a single person to be transferred? She hasn't even got an agreement on the price for each person. Home Secretary Priti Patel is making a statement in the Commons on her controversial plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing.
"There is a global migration crisis that demands innovative and international solutions," she says."This government is taking firm action." The home secretary then asserts that the permanent secretary did not oppose the plans or"assert that it is poor value for money".
