The resignation letter from the government's former ethics chief to Boris Johnson has revealed that Lord Geidt says he was"placed in an impossible and odious position".

"However, the idea that a prime minister might to any degree be in the business of deliberately breaching his own Code is s an affront. "In seeking your advice before any decision was taken, I was looking to ensure that we acted properly with due regard to the ministerial code." Mr Ellis, who was responding to an urgent question about the matter, paid tribute to Lord Geidt, saying he"demonstrated diligence and thoughtfulness in the way he has discharged his role over the course of the past year."Mr Ellis went on to explain the changes to the ministerial code which Lord Geidt advised on.

"The Prime Minister mustn't be allowed to duck accountability for his constant flouting of rules and standards."The Speaker of the House of Commons has granted Labour an urgent question about the resignation of the government's ethics chief, Lord Geidt. He said the ethics chief had discussed staying on for six months with Mr Johnson recently - and that Downing Street would release more information later today."I think sometimes we in the media and as politicians maybe underestimate how civil servants feel with that kind of scrutiny.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, Labour's shadow international trade secretary, has mounted pressure on the government over the resignation of their ethics chief, Lord Geidt. "On this occasion, we again, after the serial rule breaking the absolute contempt for the British public - [who were] following the rules - the prime minister has shown, we now see another independent ethics advisor leaving. He also stated that Lord Geidt's resignation letter to Boris Johnson"absolutely" needs to be seen.

"It was then considered by the Court of Appeal. They backed him wholeheartedly. The Supreme Court said there was no leave to appeal to the Supreme Court.
