After a vomiting episode at the weekend, the Vatican has now said that Pope Francis' condition has remained stable through the night but the prognosis is 'guarded'
Pope Francis was admitted over two weeks ago to hospital with double pneumonia, and his condition has been up and down since. A statement issued this morning on the Vatican website reads: "Pope Francis slept well throughout the night, the Holy See Press Office said on Monday morning.
"The latest update follows a Sunday evening statement that indicated the Pope's condition has remained stable. "The Press Office gave further details, noting that the Pope has not required "non-invasive mechanical ventilation," as he had used in recent days, but was still receiving supplemental, high-flow oxygenation."Consistent with the complexity of the Pope's clinical condition, the prognosis remains guarded. "On Sunday, Pope Francis participated in Holy Mass with those who have been caring for him during his hospitalization. He spent the rest of the day alternating between rest and prayer." They added: "No direct consequences from the bronchospasm the Pope experienced on Friday are evident; however, there is still a possibility the Holy Father's condition could deteriorate. "Pope Francis has been in Gemelli since 14 February, when he was admitted due to breathing difficulties." In a statement over the weekend, the press office said that the 88-year-old experienced a vomiting episode, and a "sudden worsening of his respiratory condition." He required the use of an oxygen face mask to help him breathe. The Vatican said His Holiness had responded well to oxygen therapy. As his condition remains serious, the Pope has reportedly warned the Vatican that he may not pull through, and has begun to make arrangements for his funeral. If the pope were to pass away, an Irish Cardinal, Kevin Farrell, will play a crucial role in sharing the news with the world and will also become interim pope until a new pontiff is elected. Cardinal Kevin Farrell is a senior-ranking member of the Catholic Church and the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church since 2019. If the pope dies, it is typically up to the Camerlengo to confirm the death of a pope. Traditionally, in the event of the pope’s death - and after doctors have declared him dead - Farrell reportedly visits the pope’s body in his private chapel and calls his name. If he doesn’t respond, it is tradition to destroy his signet ring and mark the end of his reign.
