Cleveland remains the big city in Ohio with the highest poverty rate, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

This is followed by Dayton , Cincinnati , Canton , Lorain , Toledo , Akron , Columbus and Parma . Data was not released for places smaller than about 65,000. On a county level, Cuyahoga had the highest poverty level in Greater Cleveland, at 15.9%. This is followed by Lorain and Portage counties , Summit , Geauga , Lake , and Medina .
About 37.9 million people nationally were in poverty in 2021, according to the official poverty measure, which considers both income and other financial sources like Social Security in the calculation. This was not statistically different from the previous year. Female-led households had the highest poverty rate of 23%, while married-couple families had the lowest at 4.8%.
