Oakland A’s have swag, opportunities and a sweep of the Astros
OAKLAND — They might pronounce it in different ways, but a trio of athletes who all spell their name S-t-e-p-h-e-n accomplished a similar feat on Wednesday at the Coliseum.
Cole Irvin pitched a gem, throwing seven innings and allowing only two earned runs in his sixth win of the season. One of those came on a mammoth 429 foot home run off the bat of Yordan Álvarez, a bomb so majestic even Irvin had to laugh about it. Kemp, who went 3-4 with two doubles and a RBI against his old team Wednesday, has put up a .400 batting average with two home runs since the All-Star break. Kemp had struggled through a horrid first half, batting .203 in 85 games. He credited time spent working on his mechanics as the reason for his recent surge.
“We’ve played really great baseball over the last three games, and even particularly this homestand,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. Kotsay noted that consistent playing time has allowed his players to get into a rhythm. He said this is not always the case, because sometimes a player only has one at-bat to impress a manager.
